Here are a list of monsters that should be in your stable if you are early to mid level in the game. Some of these monsters are worth of 6* status. Monsters listed here are ones that are very commonly found in your Magic Shop or can be farmed in Map Scenarios or Secret Dungeons.
Water Knight (Lapis): You start the game with her pretty much and she has her uses. She is able to farm Faimon Dungeon which will be very helpful to you later to level up monsters. You can also get more Hellhounds and the Fire Inugami there.
Fire Hellhound (Seiq): You start the game with him. Probably will be your hardest hitter with his basic attacks. When awakened he earns a nice ATK and CRIT bonus for the whole party. He's a little shaky HP and defense wise so if you can find those bonuses as sub stats on runes that would be good. He is easy to skill up because other versions of him can be found in your magic shop.
Wind Pixie (Shannon): An excellent party buffer and enemy spd debuffer. She can be easily found in your Magic Shop or on Wind days Secret Dungeons. She is easy to feed for the fact that other pixies are also easy to find.
Wind Warbear (Ramagos): He's a boss. Get him, awaken him, toss tons of HP his way. His clean shot ability will save the day more times than you will remember. Warbears are easily found in your Magic Shop and as drops in map scenarios...and Secret Dungeons.
Fire Harpu (Colleen): She's easy to get in your shop or fire secret dungeon days and other harpus are easy to find as well to skill her up. Colleen is useful for several reasons. She is a bit more durable that most healer types and also a bit more offensive. She does incurable damage to enemies with her second skill, her heal skill when awakened is party wide and also adds an attack boost. Nice!
Wind Griffon (Bernard): He's very good and easy to get, you can farm more of him at Tamor. Does good party buffs and I hear is a must have along with Shannon for Giant Dungeon runs.
Water Garuda (Konamiya): You might not realize why he's so good, but I will tell you. He has the ability to remove negative status from your whole party before healing them. He can also recharge your monster with an attack bonus for one turn, essentially giving them another turn. Garudas are very common monsters to find.
Water Howl (Lulu): Don't laugh or let the silly looking monster fool you. Early to mid level of this game she's probably one of the best pure healers in the game because when awakened she actually has TWO healing skills, one of which removes a negative status BEFORE it heals, unlike the Water Fairy who has to purify first and then heal again on another turn. Lulu also gets a 30% boost to her action bar whenever she attacks. Add in some speed to the mix and she's going to be getting a lot of turns and healing people fast. She's easy to skill up because Howls are very common critters. Drawbacks? Her attack is pretty much useless for damage and without HP runes she is an easy target.
Here are a few must haves that you can ONLY get on Light days and with either some luck on your end or some very generous people who will share their dungeons with you:
Light Inugami (Belladeon): He's pretty much uber. Not much more to say about him.
Light Bearman (Ahman): With the right rune setup he can be an extremely good healer because he is also a strong attacker.
Light Vagabond (Darion): Some would say the only good Vagabond. Makes for a very good tank.
